Disappearing disk space

The C: drive on the Sage server is a 120GB drive that holds nothing except the OS and the installed applications.  All of the data is stored on other hard drives.  Still, I kept running out of space on C:, despite routinely removing all of the temporary files (and everything else I could think of).  I tried TreeSize and a couple of other disk space monitoring programs, but they all insisted I had over 80GB free (as opposed to the <1GB reported by Windows).

This post clued me into the C:\System Volume Information directory as the hiding place for large files.  I had to modify the permissions to view the contents of the directory, but, sure enough, there was over 80GB in files in there.  However, none of them were index files (*.WCI) like the post I found – mine were all CLSID files.

A little searching revealed that I had 80GB of System Restore points.  To get rid of them, I had to turn off System Restore on the C: drive, which deleted all of the restore points.  I’m not sure how it happened, but the problem seems to have been resolved by that.
